For students coming from a non-Architecture undergraduate degree:

A three-year undergraduate degree with a weighted average mark (WAM) of at least 65% (University of Melbourne equivalent); and
One design studio subject and one art/architecture/built environment/design history subject at undergraduate level, or equivalent: and
A Design Portfolio; and
A Personal Statement of up to 500 words outlining relevant prior study and work experience, and motivation to undertake the program; and
Satisfy the University of Melbourne's English Language Requirement.

Prerequisite requirements

You must have completed one design studio subject and one architecture/built environment/design history subject at university level.
If you have already completed similar subjects through prior studies, please contact us to double check these meet the program prerequisites.
If you have not already completed subjects meeting these requirements, you can complete two single subjects through the University of Melbourne’s Community Access Program (CAP) or via study at another institution. Please note you require a 65% weighted average in your undergraduate degree to be eligible to apply for single subjects via CAP. The online CAP handbook provides comprehensive information about fees and how to apply.

DESIGN STUDIOS

Melbourne School of Design will accept subjects that show you have worked successfully in a studio learning situation. Ideally, it would involve the design manipulation of three-dimensional objects and spaces. If you do not have a design background, the design portfolio you need to submit will be collated with work from this subject.

We recommend the following design studio subjects:

HISTORY SUBJECTS

Melbourne School of Design will accept subjects showing evidence of success in a subject on the history of architecture, the built environment, design or art.

We recommend the following subjects to meet the history prerequisite:

INTENSIVE SUBJECT

The Melbourne School of Design offers an intensive quota subject through the Community Access Program (CAP) to satisfy the prerequisite requirement, called Foregrounding: Design Studio & History (ABPL30065) This intensive is taught over a three-week period in November, covering the content to meet both the design studio and design history prerequisite requirements.
