Master of Teaching (Secondary) graduates are ready for the challenging work of being a teacher and are greatly sought after by schools in our extensive network. There are regular opportunities for teachers to move into roles that influence and shape the direction of a school, including leadership positions.

Key career outcomes

  1. Become a secondary teacher. Register with the Victorian Institute of Teaching and be qualified to teach in two learning areas.
  2. Explore a selection of over 20 teaching paths. Choose from a wide range of subjects, from Accounting to Arts, and Legal Studies to Languages.
  3. Graduate leadership-ready. You will graduate with the capabilities and confidence to move into leadership roles when the time comes.

Where can secondary teaching take you?

As well as allowing you to register as a teacher, a Master of Teaching (Secondary) can also lead to roles in:

  • Government services such as children’s services coordination and education policy
  • Health services such as youth wellbeing services
  • Education services such as assessment and evaluation services
  • Regulatory authorities such as quality regulation and assessment.

Accreditation

The Master of Teaching (Secondary) is accredited by the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) according to the Australian Institute of Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) Graduate Standards and Initial Teacher Education Program Standards. Graduates may apply for registration to teach in Australian schools.

After graduating from the University of Melbourne with an Arts degree – and a stint in London – she returned to begin a Master of Teaching (Secondary) at the Melbourne Graduate School of Education. There are a lot more professional development opportunities at a regional school due to smaller numbers and fewer staff wanting to take on leadership roles, and I have taken every opportunity that has come my way.
