Profile
Kannan Sethuraman
I am an expert on the transferability of lean operations to healthcare. In my current research, I’m delving into how disinvestment in low-value care can be promoted through the design of meaningful countermeasures. I am also studying the transferability and applicability of healthcare innovations from developing nations to Australia.
In the Clinical Leadership program, we explore how operational excellence can be achieved through leadership. I challenge participants to rethink how their workplaces can offer affordable world-class healthcare, looking at pioneering examples and studying their innovative approaches. I introduce the basic concepts behind lean operations and discuss the experience of Virginia Mason Medical Centre in Seattle, and their application of lean principles to their healthcare delivery process. Building on this case study, we explore the prerequisites for embracing lean in the Australian context and discuss the readiness of the participants' workplaces for this transformation.
It has been incredibly rewarding to be a part of this program. The participants are receptive to new ideas and engage enthusiastically, and exceptional in-class discussions have fostered several new collaborative research possibilities.
