Change of Preference FAQs

Find answers to your top questions about applying to study at Melbourne in 2026.

The University has experienced very high demand for the Bachelor of Science in the VTAC December offer round. As a result, most of the Commonwealth Supported Places quota was filled. Only students whose results were unavailable in December (Queensland and Western Australia) will receive offers for the Bachelor of Science in January offer round 1.

In January offer round 2, offers will be made exclusively to school leaver students from New Zealand whose results will be available later in January. Students holding a Narrm, Chancellor's, Humanitarian or Hansen Scholarship will also be considered in this round.

The University is not able to offer places in the Bachelor of Science in further VTAC rounds to students outside the circumstances listed above.

You can change your course preferences and their order anytime up until the change of preference period closes for the upcoming offer round. Visit our key information webpage for dates and times.

For details on how to do this, visit the VTAC website.

Please note, that based on your personal information and location you may be automatically considered without submitting an application. Late applications are not accepted.

Depending on your circumstances, you could qualify for adjusted entry scores or the Access Melbourne ATAR guarantee for single degrees and Graduate Degree Packages.

An email will be sent to all applicants in early December to confirm your eligibility for Access Melbourne and what circumstances you qualified for. With these details, you can use the Access Melbourne calculator to receive an indication of the required ATAR for your course.

Certain Access Melbourne circumstances are automatically eligible for scholarships, including the Narrm Scholarship Program and other faculty equity scholarships.

You can feel assured in your course preferences and plan ahead with confidence by referring to our 2026 ATAR guarantees and Access Melbourne guarantees and considering the lowest selection ranks from the December offer round from last years’ intake.

Currently, to be eligible for a University of Melbourne undergraduate degree, you will require an ATAR for entry (unless you are applying for a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, for which completion of the VCE or equivalent, meeting prerequisite study scores and the audition/interview requirements is acceptable for entry without an ATAR).

I studied an International Baccalaureate (IB)

You will be sent a notional ATAR statement. A notional ATAR is a rank calculated by VTAC and used to directly compare the results of applicants who have studied under different Victorian educational systems. A notional ATAR is treated in the same way as a normal ATAR for course selection purposes.

I studied at a high school overseas

You’ll need to check if your education provider’s qualification meets the minimum Victorian Tertiary Entrance Requirements.

I didn't complete Year 12

If you didn’t complete Year 12 and are a non-school leaver (23 years of age or older), we have an entry pathway through Access Melbourne, our equity entry scheme. You’ll need to demonstrate your likelihood to succeed in your application. If you are already studying a graded, cognate diploma or advanced diploma at TAFE or another university you may be able to use those results as part of your application to study with us.

You can satisfy subject prerequisites by taking the following studies or tests. If the qualification you've completed, or intend on completing, does not appear on our website, you will need to attach a syllabus/subject outline to your application.

Satisfy subject prerequisites

For scholarships that are considered automatically (based on your VTAC equity schemes and scholarship application or ATAR results), the first release of many scholarships will be alongside the release the VCE ATAR results, on and around Thursday 11 December, this includes the Melbourne Chancellor’s Scholarship and the Narrm Scholarship.

For interstate-based students, the dates will be dependent on VTAC and the University of Melbourne receiving results from your state/territory, but they are typically later than Victoria.

Some scholarships require a separate application from commencing students.

Check your faculty website and search on the scholarships website to discover all scholarships you could be eligible for.

Based on the personal information and location details provided in your VTAC profile, you may be automatically considered for our equity entry scheme Access Melbourne without submitting an application. Access Melbourne circumstances that are considered can include your home address (living in a low socioeconomic or regional or remote area), if you’re of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander decent, or if you’re the first in the family to attend university.

You can begin to plan out your course using the My Course Planner tool, even before you accept your offer.

This means you have secured your undergraduate and graduate place at the University of Melbourne from day one. Graduate Degree Packages are open to all students.

Domestic students are eligible for a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) for both their undergraduate and graduate courses, while international students may receive an International Fee Place (IFP) in both their undergraduate and graduate courses.
