Overview
This is a Certified innovative and practical introductory course for Nursing, Medical and Allied Health Professionals that focuses on bedside Lung and Sternal Ultrasound in the Cardiothoracic setting.
Bedside point of care ultrasound is transforming clinical management and changing the rules in cardiothoracic settings and is rapidly becoming used by many clinical specialties.
Ultrasound of the lung enables real-time, non-invasive, rapid diagnosis and day to day monitoring of acute lung conditions such as effusion, consolidation, atelectasis, pulmonary oedema and pneumothorax. It is faster, more convenient and often more accurate than a chest x-ray and has no radiation risk.
Ultrasound of the sternum enables early reliable and accurate identification of sternal complications including bone non-union, instability and dehiscence. A sternal wound infection which have significant implications for patient morbidity and mortality impacting mobilisation and recovery after cardiac surgery.
Designed For
Highly recommended for health professionals including Nursing, Medical and Allied Health Professionals. Physiotherapists may elect to enrol in the course: “Ultrasound Imaging for Physiotherapists” as this also includes units on Ultrasound Imaging of Skeletal Muscle
Learning Outcomes
- Define the basic mode of ultrasound imaging
- Identify the essential technical components required for ultrasound and the sternum
- Identify the key steps to acquire ultrasound images of the lung and the sternum
- Analyse, interpret and report findings of ultrasound imaging of the lung and sternum
- Identify OH and S guidelines that inform safe ultrasound imaging (i.e., Infection control)

Assessment
The assessment involves submission of all unit self-assessments and case studies. A certificate will be issued upon successful completion of the required assessments.
Delivery Mode
Course completion requires approximately 10 hours of online learning and completion of all associated assessments.
This course is flexible and self -paced enabling participants to complete units in their own time and provides an opportunity to review and revise content.
