Entry requirements

Domestic student Change

You're considered a domestic student if you're an Australian or New Zealand citizen, an Australian permanent resident, or have a permanent humanitarian visa. This applies even if you're studying abroad or have dual Australian citizenship.

Admission criteria

To be considered for entry into this course, you must have completed an undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in a directly related discipline with a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of at least 70% in appropriate subjects (or equivalent).

As part of your application to this course, you must also prepare and submit a thesis proposal before the application closing date.

Where degree levels are referenced, levels align with the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). Applications are assessed against these standards.

Where our admission criteria includes a minimum Weighted Average Mark (WAM) and/or specific subject criteria, these are based on University of Melbourne grades and subjects. If you've studied elsewhere, we'll assess your relevant prior studies and equivalent grades. Your final WAM may be adjusted depending on your previous institution's accreditation, subject grading, and pass marks.

All applicants to the University of Melbourne must satisfy the English language requirements. Please note that there is no mid-year (July intake) entry for the following specialisations: Anthropology; Criminology; History; Politics and International Studies; Public Policy and Management; Sociology; and Gender studies.

You are strongly encouraged to seek feedback about your thesis proposal from a potential supervisor prior to applying. Thesis supervisors are usually assigned when you commence your course, and discussing your thesis proposal with a staff member does not guarantee your choice of supervisor.

In addition to your suitability for this course, the Selection Committee will also consider the availability of supervision and resources in suitable project areas. Quotas may be applied to the course as a whole or to individual discipline streams, and preference may be given to applicants with evidence of appropriate preparation or potential to undertake research.
