Admission criteria
To be considered for entry into this course, you must have:
- An undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline, AND
- A minimum of two years of full-time documented professional experience in studio-based music teaching, with a minimum of ten students over a two-year period, with an employment reference, AND
- Music skills equivalent to the Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB) Practical Grade 8 and AMEB
)Theory Grade 5, AND - A valid Working with Children Check.
You must also submit:
- A portfolio that includes video demonstrating music skills
- A letter of reference confirming your level of experience as a studio music teacher.

English language requirements
All applicants to the University of Melbourne must satisfy the English language requirements. About selection
When assessing (and where relevant, ranking) applications, the Selection Committee will consider:
- Prior academic performance
The Selection Committee will also consider your prior academic performance, relevant work experience and portfolio that includes demonstrating music skills.
Employment reference
Your employment reference should confirm your level of experience as a studio music teacher. This can be provided by a music education employer or a music education colleague who is familiar with your work. It should include:
- The referee’s name, phone number and professional position;
- How long and in what capacity they have known you;
- Their description of your current level of experience and skills as a music studio teacher.
Portfolio
Your portfolio should include a video recording demonstrating your music performance skills, including three pieces played on your primary instrument representing your highest level of skill (no more than fifteen minutes of music is required in total).
Recordings must be no more than 6 months old at the time of submission, and do not have to be professionally produced. Using a phone or video camera to record is acceptable.
Videos can be submitted by providing a link to a shared file or streaming service in a word document.
The Selection Committee may seek further information to clarify any aspect of an application in accordance with the Selection and Admission Policy.
Meeting the minimum entry requirements for this course does not guarantee selection.

Graduate Access Melbourne (GAM)
We encourage domestic students to explore eligibility for Graduate Access Melbourne (GAM). GAM offers an opportunity for admission to this course even if your tertiary marks are below the standard entry requirements. GAM applicants may also be considered for financial bursaries and Commonwealth Supported Places (CSPs) where available.
