Student experience
Overview
There’s more to university than just going to class and studying for exams! Make the most of your time on campus by taking advantage of all that the University of Melbourne has to offer.
Support and mentoring
We know that starting university can be an exciting but challenging time. Our goal is to make you feel comfortable and confident right from the beginning.
Before you even start classes, you’ll attend a welcome day and orientation activities, where you’ll receive course advice. While you’re with us, we offer academic skills support, mentoring, health services, counselling and financial aid. If you’re an international student, we have support programs especially for you.
What’s studying Science really like?
Study in the heart of Melbourne
Based on our beautiful Parkville campus, you’ll be situated right next to the city’s centre. We have easy access to everything the city offers – restaurants, galleries, theatres and shopping – but with a close and supportive community on campus.
Surrounded by the institutes and companies that make up the Melbourne Innovation District and Melbourne Biomedical Precinct, you’ll find career opportunities literally on your doorstep.

Student clubs and societies
Get involved! The University has over 200 clubs and societies, so find the ones that fit your interests and join up. There are more than 30 clubs dedicated to science alone. Look up the regular events run by the Science Students’ Society and the Agricultural and Food Sciences Society, which give you the chance to make new connections with other like-minded students.

Volunteering and leadership
Volunteering is a great chance to extend your learning opportunities, connect with communities, and build your CV. You might find yourself mentoring high-school students in In2Science, inspiring prospective students as a Science Student Ambassador, presenting a science show in Science Delivery, or working as a mediator in the Science Gallery.
Danielle Tang
"Before I finished my BAg degree in 2019, my mind was made up to continue my postgraduate study in viticulture and find solutions for the wine industry to adapt to climate change. I was honoured to be offered an honours offer and continue my research with the DAFW group to use sensors to predict wine quality. From that project, I have learnt the power of technology and the potential if we could harness it to transform agriculture into a more sustainable and efficient practice, which is what I have been deeply passionate about!
Near the end of my honours degree, I was luckily offered a PhD position under the collaboration of GRDC, Agriculture Victoria and The university of Melbourne. My PhD aims to use sensing technologies like sensors and satellite images to create in-season quality traits map for growers to maximise their profits. It has been a rare but precious opportunity for me to connect with the wimmera growers, international experts and link directly with the industry."
