Admission criteria

To be considered for entry into this course, you must have:

  • An undergraduate degree in music, or equivalent in non-cognate area, OR
  • At least six years of documented relevant professional work experience.

You must also submit a supplementary application, submitted digitally via Fine Arts and Music’s SlideRoom):

  • A curriculum vitae (CV), AND
  • Submit a portfolio, AND
  • Complete an audition.

Shortlisted applicants may also be required to attend an interview.

English language requirements

All applicants to the University of Melbourne must satisfy the English language requirements. This may be achieved in a number of ways, including recognised previous study taught and assessed entirely in English or an approved English language test. If you are from a non-English speaking background, the required standard of English for this degree is one of the following English proficiency test scores:

About selection

When assessing applications, the Selection Committee will consider your previous studies and academic performance.

The Selection Committee may request additional information to clarify any aspect of an application, according to the University’s Academic Board rules regarding selection instruments.

Meeting the published entry requirements for this course does not guarantee selection.

The Selection Committee will also assess your portfolio, audition and, if relevant to your application, your professional history.

Your portfolio should contain:

  • A curriculum vitae (CV) with academic and relevant employment history, AND
  • A list of works performed in public (orchestral, chamber, and solo), AND
  • A 400-750 word personal and artistic statement reflecting on your experience with reference to selected compositions, and your aspirations.

Your audition should contain / For your audition, you should prepare:

  • a 20-minute audition using prescribed repertoire for your instrument including:
    • orchestral excerpts; and
    • a movement of a standard concerto (or equivalent).

If your application is shortlisted, you will also be invited to and assessed on your performance in an interview.

Additional information

If you discontinue the Master of Music (Orchestral Performance) but have successfully completed the requirements of the Graduate Diploma in Orchestral Studies, you will be eligible to apply to receive the graduate diploma as an exit award.

Successful admission to this degree is dependent on a suitable spread of instruments across all sections of the orchestra. Consequently, places will be available based on available places in that instrument group at the time of selection.

Graduate Access Melbourne (GAM)

We encourage domestic students to explore eligibility for Graduate Access Melbourne (GAM). GAM offers an opportunity for admission to this course even if your tertiary marks are below the standard entry requirements. GAM applicants may also be considered for financial bursaries and Commonwealth Supported Places (CSPs) where available.

GAM categories include coming from a rural area, being an Indigenous Australian, experiencing financial hardship or personal difficulties, having refugee status, or living with a disability or medical condition. In assessing applications, we look to balance opportunity and your capacity to succeed.

Advanced Standing

Prior studies may be credited towards your degree and potentially reduce the duration of your course. This is known as Advanced Standing (also known as credit or recognition of prior learning).
