Overview
Meet Kliment Poposki
It was a long journey for Kliment Poposki from science to Dramaturgy, but now he can’t imagine doing anything else.
Ten years ago, I didn’t even know what dramaturgy was. Now this has become the most natural space to create, think, even exist in. The immersion into dramaturgy has opened a mode of existence and creation in which I find myself so naturally at ease. I have discovered a forum and a community in which we together cultivate and nurture a language to speak about art, formulate our questions, and interrogate our being-in-the world.
Even though performing arts was always my main passion, as a child of a first-generation immigrant family, I was expected to obtain a science degree. I found myself endlessly deviating from the subjects I was supposed to study. Instead, I read about philosophy, psychology and art. I graduated with a Bachelor of Science, but I still felt drawn towards the performing arts.
I am most inspired by the courage of VCA to push the boundaries of what performance is. It is a moving experience just to witness, and occasionally even be part of such compelling creative work. The interdisciplinary areas I was introduced to in this program, including queer theory, phenomenology and philosophy, social theory and indigenous art, have also shaped my thinking as an artist.
Faculty of Fine Arts and Music
The course is taught at the Faculty of Fine Arts and Music, the proud home of the Victorian College of the Arts and the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music.
Much of the teaching, research and performance takes place in our purpose-built facilities on the University of Melbourne’s Southbank campus at the heart of the Melbourne Arts Precinct.
Recently, the Faculty’s Southbank campus has undergone large-scale capital works transforming our facilities and creating an industry-ready, world-class experience for our students and staff.

Situated in the heart of Melbourne's Arts Precinct, the Wilin Centre for Indigenous Arts and Cultural Development provides exposure to contemporary Indigenous arts practices and supports the recruitment of Indigenous artists, academics and students.

Alyson Campbell
Meet Alyson Campbell, Associate Professor in Theatre
Associate Professor in Theatre Alyson Campbell is a freelance director and dramaturg with an astounding 30-year career, and teaching credits that feature the School of Creative Arts, the University of Melbourne, Queen's University Belfast and Brunel University, London. Here Alyson shares with us what makes a good dramaturg student.
"We have had great dramaturgy students from a wide range of backgrounds, including filmmaking, music composing, stage management, lighting design and dance, as well as more directly "theatre" paths. What makes a "good" dramaturgy student is a love of looking at how things work: finding patterns, seeing possibilities, being open to new forms and ideas, and being in a creative process with other people. They also enrich the experience of theatre by thinking deeply about it and then love to communicate ideas with audiences – above all, they want to know what a performance is doing in dialogue with the world around it."
