1 GPA The GPA is unweighted, based on a 4.0 scale from an accredited US high school. The University does not recognise the GED for admission to its undergraduate degrees.

2Test score The University is not test-optional. You must submit one of the following test scores:  SAT, ACT, or an AP exam aggregate score. The University does not super score SAT or ACT test results, nor does it take the SAT essay or the ACT writing test into consideration. The SAT and ACT test scores are valid for two years from the start date of your course at the University.

An AP aggregate score is an alternative way to meet the test score requirement. The aggregate score is based on a minimum of three and maximum of four AP exams. Any AP exam can be used to calculate the aggregate score. Test scores under three are not used in the aggregate score calculation or to meet prerequisites. An AP exam can be taken in any year of high school to be eligible for the aggregate score or to satisfy prerequisites. The University requires only an AP exam score and not the corresponding AP course as part of your application.  The University does not award credit for AP exams.

3Prerequisite subjects
Individual units of study are called subjects in Australia. There are several ways to satisfy subject prerequisites:

English
The English language requirement must be satisfied by all applicants, including native English speakers. Your options include:

The University does not accept any other English studies from a US high school curriculum to meet the English language requirement.

Bachelor of Arts
Economics is offered as a major both in the Bachelor of Arts and the Bachelor of Commerce. Bachelor of Arts applicants intending to major in Economics are strongly encouraged to meet the mathematics requirement specified for the Bachelor of Commerce as this requirement must be met prior to enrolling in subjects in the major.

6Bachelor of Design
Engineering majors are offered in the Bachelor of Biomedicine, Bachelor of Design and the Bachelor of Science. Bachelor of Design applicants intending to major in Civil Engineering Systems, Computing and Software Systems, Construction, Digital Infrastructure Engineering Systems, Mechanical Engineering Systems or Property may be required to undertake a bridging subject in mathematics in their first year of the Bachelor of Design, if they do not have the mathematics prerequisite specified for the Bachelor of Science.

7Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Music
Both courses require the satisfactory completion of a US high school diploma but do not require a minimum GPA. Admission for each course is based on a portfolio, audition and interview, and other course-specific additional requirements. See Auditions and Interviews for more information.

8Bachelor of Oral Health
The Bachelor of Oral Health has vocational outcomes such as dental hygienist and dental therapist specific to Australia. The course is not a pathway to become a dentist or to pursue professional dentistry studies such as the Doctor of Dental Surgery at the University of Melbourne. Score and transcript reporting
International students
International students apply directly to the University.  The University’s requires un-editable documents to be uploaded to your application. You can also request to have your test scores sent to the University (using the College Board SAT and AP exams code 9015, ACT code 1830). If you do not have access to your transcripts, you can have your school or third parties send transcripts to the University’s undergraduate admissions office at undergrad-admissions@unimelb.edu.au, or via Parchment, National Student Clearinghouse, or Naviance.

Domestic students
Domestic students studying overseas (Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents and New Zealand citizens) must apply for all undergraduate courses through Victoria Tertiary Admission Centre (VTAC). The scores listed above should be considered a minimum score to be eligible for a place in that course. The actual standard required may be higher depending on the demand for the course and the number of Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP) available.

Domestic students studying overseas should upload documents directly to your VTAC application. You can also request to have your test scores sent to VTAC (College Board SAT and AP exams code 3847, ACT code 2937). If you do not have access to your transcripts, you can contact VTAC.

All documents should be included in your VTAC application. The exception is AP exam results released in July for students applying for a mid-year intake. You should email these AP exam results to the University’s undergraduate admissions office at undergrad-admissions@unimelb.edu.au, noting your VTAC ID number.

Score reporting

The Univeristy's preference is for standardised test scores (SAT and AP exams) to be uploaded to a student’s application. For international students, official, uneditable score reports can be uploaded to their University application; for overseas Australians, to their VTAC application. Alternatively, international applicants can have their test scores sent directly to the University and overseas Australians’ scores sent directly to VTAC.

  • University of Melbourne College Board code (SAT and AP exams): 9015 – international applicants
  • VTAC College Board code (SAT and AP exams): 3847 – overseas Australian applicants

Applicants do not have the ability to self-report ACT scores. International applicants can send ACT score reports direct to the University using the code 1830. For overseas Australians, VTAC currently does not have a reporting code. Overseas Australians should use the code 1830 to report ACT scores to the University and send an email to undergrad-admissions@unimelb.edu.au, with the following information: full name, date of birth, VTAC application number and course (degree) for which they are applying.

English language requirements

You may meet the English language requirements by achieving a score of at least 3 in the AP English Language and Composition or AP English Literature and Composition exam.
Alternatively, the University offers additional ways to satisfy the English language requirements.
