Admissions overview and key dates
Application closing dates vary by course and level of study. Check individual course pages for specific deadlines. A non-refundable application fee applies for all new direct international applications.
Check individual course pages for specific deadlines.
Entry requirements vary by course and study level – refer to the individual course page. Undergraduate applicants need to have completed a qualification equivalent to Australian Year 12 and must meet any subject prerequisites. Graduate coursework applicants typically need to have completed an undergraduate degree and meet a minimum Weighted Average Mark (WAM). Graduate research applicants generally need to have completed a four-year degree with a research component.
Meeting minimum requirements makes a student eligible to apply — it doesn’t guarantee selection.
Forecast results: Undergraduate applicants studying GCE A Levels or the International Baccalaureate (IB) may be eligible for an unconditional offer based on forecast results, without waiting for final results. Predicted grades must meet or exceed the guaranteed entry score for the course.
Students whose qualification isn’t listed on the recognised international qualifications page may be eligible through Trinity College Foundation Studies, which offers guaranteed entry into undergraduate degrees for students who achieve the required scores.
All international applicants need to satisfy the University’s English language requirements through an approved proficiency test, previous study in English, or a bridging pathway. Required scores vary by course and level.
International students apply directly to the University through the online application portal. Students can list up to three course preferences in a single application. Agents can lodge applications on behalf of students.
Tip for agents: Encourage students to submit all required documents with their initial application to avoid processing delays.
Check current indicative processing times for undergraduate, graduate coursework and research applications.
Tip for agents: Incomplete applications take significantly longer. Encourage students to submit all required documents with their initial application to avoid delays.
Successful applicants receive an offer by email — either unconditional or conditional on meeting outstanding requirements.
To accept, students log in to the portal, accept the terms, and pay the tuition deposit (credited toward first-semester fees). Both the student and the agent must complete acceptance in the student portal AND submit an acceptance agreement before the lapse date.
Every offer includes a lapse date. If the lapse date passes without acceptance, the offer expires and the student must reapply. Extensions are not guaranteed — if an extension is required, submit a request via the agent enquiry form as early as possible.
Genuine Student requirement: The University conducts Genuine Student (GS) assessments prior to making unconditional offers. Applicants from any country may be selected at random. Ensure your students understand the GS requirement and are prepared to provide supporting documentation if requested.
Once a student has accepted and paid, the University issues a CoE. Students need this to apply for their Australian student visa (subclass 500). In some cases, students who haven’t yet received final results may be eligible for a conditional CoE — checklists and eligibility information for conditional CoE requests are available through the agent training portal.
Conditional CoE eligibility: Students may be eligible if they are in their final semester of study, have a conditional offer for the next available intake where the only outstanding condition is completing their current degree (may also require a specified WAM/GPA), have met English language requirements, and have appointed an authorised education agent. Undergraduate conditional CoE requests may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Students also need Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) and may need to complete character and health checks. Once enrolled, the University provides dedicated support for international students including visa guidance, health and wellbeing services, and practical arrival information.
Tuition fees vary by course and are set annually. They’re published on individual course pages. Students who withdraw before the census date are generally eligible for a refund.
Advanced standing (also known as credit or recognition of prior learning / RPL) allows students with prior tertiary study to receive credit toward their Melbourne course, which can reduce course duration and cost. For undergraduate study, applications are assessed after a student has accepted an offer, based on the comparability of prior learning. For graduate study, it is assessed during course application.
Entry points and advanced entry for graduate study: Some graduate courses are offered at different entry points (e.g. 200, 150 or 100 credit points) based on the student’s prior qualifications. A student entering at a lower credit point total completes a shorter version of the course. This is distinct from advanced standing — the entry point is determined at admission, whereas advanced standing is assessed after enrolment. Both affect course duration, total fees and visa length.
Tip for agents: Select shorter entry points for students with a cognate study background at the time of application rather than requesting a credit assessment later. Credit exemptions are assessed at the time of application if shorter entry points are chosen, and many faculties have strict deadlines for advanced standing applications — selecting the correct entry point upfront helps avoid the risk of a credit request being declined.
Note: Credit and entry point decisions are course-specific and can’t be confirmed before an offer is made. Encourage students to include full transcripts and subject outlines with their application for the most accurate assessment.

Frequently asked questions
The University uses offer lapse periods to track acceptances. If your student needs more time, submit a request through the agent enquiry form (can be found within the Agent Portal) as early as possible. Extensions are not guaranteed and are assessed on a case-by-case basis.
Some graduate courses require applicants to provide contact details of a professional referee as part of the entry requirements. Requirements vary by course — check the entry requirements on the relevant course page to confirm whether referees are needed.
Where required, referees are nominated in the online application. The University may contact referees directly as part of the assessment process.
Tip for agents: Ensure your student has confirmed their referee’s contact details are current and that the referee is expecting to be contacted. An unresponsive referee can delay application assessment.
Students can list up to three course preferences in their application. If a student changes their mind after submitting, preference changes can be requested by contacting Stop 1. Changes must be made within published due dates.
Note for agents: If the new preference has different entry requirements or prerequisites, the student may need to provide additional documentation.
International students may be able to defer for up to 12 months. Not all courses allow deferrals. Students submit a request online after receiving their offer. If a Confirmation of enrolment (CoE) has already been issued, documented compassionate or compelling circumstances are required.
Some graduate courses are offered in different point versions (e.g. 200, 150 or 100 points), determining duration and depth. The version a student is eligible for depends on their prior qualifications and is assessed during admissions.
Why this matters: Point versions affect course duration, total fees and visa length. Discuss early with your student.
The University doesn't offer formal 2+2 articulation agreements. Students with prior tertiary study may be eligible for advanced standing (credit) that can shorten their degree.
For students who haven't completed a qualification equivalent to Australian Year 12, Trinity College Foundation Studies provides a structured undergraduate pathway with guaranteed entry into a Melbourne undergraduate degree for students who achieve the required scores. Trinity is the University's recommended preparation pathway and is widely used by students from China and other markets where secondary qualifications aren't directly recognised for entry.
Melbourne's degree structure works differently from most Australian universities. Students start with a broad three-year undergraduate degree (Bachelor of Arts, Science, Commerce, Design, Biomedicine, Fine Arts or Music), then specialise through a graduate professional degree (e.g. Juris Doctor, Master of Engineering, Doctor of Medicine).
This matters for agents because it affects how you counsel students on course selection, duration and total cost. A student aiming for finance, for example, would complete a three-year Bachelor of Commerce followed by a two-year Master of Finance — five years total. The undergraduate degree also qualifies graduates for entry into a range of master's programs, not just one, giving students flexibility to specialise based on how their interests develop.
High-achieving students can secure a guaranteed place in their graduate professional degree before starting their undergraduate degree through the Graduate Degree Package. For students entering via Trinity College Foundation Studies, this pathway is also available provided they meet the required scores.
International full-time students need a valid student visa. The Department of Home Affairs sets visa requirements and eligibility. The University provides dedicated international student support to help students understand and meet their visa requirements and ongoing obligations.
Students who wish to withdraw or cancel before commencing should contact Stop 1. Withdrawal timing affects fee liability — students who withdraw before the census date are generally eligible for a refund. Students who withdraw after census date may still be liable for fees for that study period.
Note for agents: Withdrawal also affects the student’s visa status. International students should seek advice before withdrawing, as changes to enrolment may trigger a visa reporting obligation.
Yes. The University provides country and region-specific profiles for key student markets, including downloadable guides designed for sharing with students and families. A Chinese-language course guide is available, with additional market profiles for India, Indonesia, Vietnam and more.
